Why Location Matters in Denver
Denver is unlike anywhere else in the world. With its incredible elevation and sweeping mountain views, every location tells its own story. At more than 5,280 feet above sea level, the air is thinner, the sun is stronger, and the light behaves differently than it does in lower elevations. This combination creates luminous, glowing tones that are perfect for maternity portraits when planned with care.
The altitude also affects temperature and comfort, which is especially important during pregnancy. Even in summer, evenings can cool quickly once the sun dips behind the Rockies. Winter days may bring radiant sunshine one moment and a sudden chill the next. Understanding these shifts allows me to choose session times and locations that keep you feeling comfortable and radiant throughout your experience.
Each season in Denver offers its own kind of beauty. Spring brings soft greens and blossoms that feel light and romantic. Summer evenings are warm and golden, while autumn fills the landscape with deep, rich color. Winter can be magical too, with snow-capped peaks and crisp, clear air that lends an ethereal glow to every image.
The timing of your session is just as important as the location itself. Colorado’s light changes dramatically throughout the day. The golden hour before sunset creates soft, flattering illumination that enhances skin tones and adds depth to your images. Sunrise offers equally stunning results, especially in quieter mountain or meadow locations where the early morning light feels peaceful and pure.
As an experienced Denver maternity photographer, I plan each session around these natural elements. The right combination of light, landscape, and timing ensures your portraits feel elegant, intentional, and deeply connected to this beautiful place we call home.
Top Denver Maternity Photography Locations
Choosing the right location for your Denver maternity photography session sets the tone for your entire experience. Whether you envision dramatic mountain views or something more serene and intimate, Colorado offers an incredible range of backdrops that can be tailored to your vision. Below are a few of my favorite locations, each with its own unique personality and charm.
Castlewood Canyon – Castle Rock
Castlewood Canyon is the perfect blend of rustic and romantic. The canyon walls, wildflowers, and winding creek provide a natural, organic setting that feels untouched and private. It’s an ideal location for mothers who love texture and depth in their portraits.
Ideal season: Late summer and early fall are particularly striking, when the foliage turns golden and the light softens. Spring also offers beautiful greens and blossoms along the creek.
Parking and access: There are multiple parking areas within the park, and many overlooks are only a short walk from your vehicle. The trails are manageable for expectant mothers and provide several scenic stops along the way.
Lighting tip: The canyon catches both sunrise and sunset beautifully, allowing flexibility in timing. Afternoon light here glows softly off the canyon walls.
Van Bibber Open Space Park – Arvada
Van Bibber Open Space Park offers a charming, pastoral atmosphere just minutes from the city. Its wide meadows, tree-lined paths, and unobstructed mountain views create a feeling of serenity and simplicity.
Ideal season: Spring and summer sessions are lush and bright, while fall brings a soft, golden palette. Winter mornings can be crisp and clear with a light dusting of frost that adds an ethereal quality to your images.
Parking and access: Free parking is available at the main entrance. The paths are flat and stroller-friendly, making it a comfortable choice for maternity sessions.
Lighting tip: The park’s open fields are ideal for sunset sessions. The light wraps beautifully around subjects, creating a soft, romantic glow.
Roxborough State Park – Littleton
Roxborough State Park is one of Colorado’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. Towering red rock formations rise from the earth, creating an elegant, sculptural backdrop that feels both timeless and powerful. The contrast between the deep rust tones and soft, feminine silhouettes makes it an unforgettable setting for maternity portraits.
Ideal season: Roxborough is stunning all year. Spring and summer offer lush green valleys, while fall brings warm golden hues. Winter sessions are serene and quiet, with red rocks dusted in snow.
Parking and access: A small park fee is required. The main lot is close to the most picturesque trails, making it easy for expecting mothers to access without long hikes.
Lighting tip: The west-facing overlooks are ideal for golden hour sessions, where sunlight paints the red rocks in a warm, glowing hue.
South Mesa Trailhead – Eldorado Canyon
South Mesa Trailhead, nestled just outside Boulder in the stunning Eldorado Canyon area, is one of the most enchanting locations for Denver maternity photography. The landscape unfolds into vast meadows, rustic wooden fences, and panoramic views of the iconic Flatirons. It’s a location that feels open, grounded, and effortlessly elegant, offering both natural beauty and peaceful seclusion.
Ideal season: Late spring through early fall offers the most vibrant colors and comfortable temperatures. In spring, the meadows bloom with wildflowers and soft green grasses. By autumn, the canyon glows with golden tones that complement flowing gowns and natural textures.
Parking and access: The trailhead provides a generous parking area, and many of the most scenic spots are accessible with only a short walk. The terrain is gentle, making it ideal for expectant mothers who want the beauty of the foothills without a strenuous hike.
Lighting tip: South Mesa is exquisite during golden hour. The sun dips behind the Flatirons, casting a warm, dreamy light across the meadow. Sunrise sessions here are equally stunning, with soft pastels illuminating the landscape before the day begins.
Private Studio – Denver
For clients who prefer a more intimate or editorial setting, my private studio in Denver offers a luxurious indoor alternative. The studio experience is designed to be comfortable, private, and fully customizable, with access to professional lighting, wardrobe, and styling.
Studio sessions are perfect year-round and provide complete control over light, temperature, and aesthetic. Whether you envision soft, natural tones or dramatic fine art portraits, every session is tailored to highlight your unique beauty and story.
Each of these locations has its own energy and charm. When we plan your Denver maternity photography session, I’ll help you choose the setting that best reflects your style, comfort, and story. Together, we’ll create portraits that are both timeless and deeply meaningful.
What to Wear for Your Maternity Session
Your wardrobe plays an essential role in how your Denver maternity photography session feels and photographs. The right clothing elevates the emotion, movement, and artistry of every image. My goal is to help you feel confident, radiant, and completely at ease, so your natural beauty shines through with grace and authenticity.
When styling your session, think of textures, movement, and harmony with the landscape. Flowy, luxurious fabrics capture light beautifully and add a sense of softness and motion to your portraits. Below are my recommendations to help you prepare.
Fabric and Fit
- Choose timeless materials such as chiffon, lace, or silk blends. These fabrics move elegantly in the breeze and create a sense of gentle motion.
- Select solid colors that complement the environment. Cream and ivory look stunning against dark evergreens, while jewel tones such as emerald, ruby, or sapphire photograph beautifully among the red rocks.
- Avoid busy prints, logos, or heavy polyester fabrics that can create distracting reflections in the light.
Footwear
- Choose footwear that is both comfortable and refined. Wedges, sandals, or ballet flats work well for most outdoor settings. Even if you plan to be barefoot in the photos, be sure to bring comfortable and practical footwear to get to those beautiful scenic spots.
- If your location includes uneven terrain, opt for low heels or shoes that allow for easy movement, especially in the later stages of pregnancy.
Layers and Accessories
- Colorado’s weather can shift quickly, so bring a light wrap, shawl, or textured layer for warmth. These layers also add depth and variation to your gallery.
- For your partner and children, coordinate rather than match. Choose complementary tones and layered textures that photograph harmoniously together. A blazer, linen jacket, or soft knit adds dimension without drawing focus away from you.
Color Inspiration by Setting
- Green meadows or Flatirons: earthy tones like sage, dusty rose, or chocolate brown.
- Red rocks: warm neutrals such as cream, muted gold, or rust. Black can also create a striking contrast with the warm red rocks.
- Waterfront or urban skyline: deep hues like navy, emerald, or ivory for a refined contrast.
Beauty and Hair Preparation
- Hair and makeup can take upwards of 2 hours for a single person depending on the length and thickness of your hair as well as how elaborate of a hairstyle that you choose. Children and men who are getting light styling usually take about 20-30 minutes each. Make sure to factor this in when planning the time of your photoshoot. If your photographer doesn't include these services, you should still plan to arrive about 15 minutes early to allow time for touch-ups and to relax before your session begins.
- Colorado’s altitude often brings a light breeze, so bring a clip or light hairspray to help maintain your style.
- Apply sunscreen before your session, especially if we are photographing outdoors. The sun is stronger at higher elevation, and protecting your skin helps maintain a soft, even glow.
Altitude and Comfort
At Denver’s elevation of approximately 5,280 feet, hydration and comfort are key. Wear breathable fabrics, drink plenty of water before and during your session, and choose silhouettes that allow easy movement and natural posture. It's also a great idea to have some high protein snacks as well as something sugary on hand as pregnancy can cause unpredictable spikes and dips in blood pressure and blood sugar.
Your maternity portraits are meant to reflect who you are in this sacred season. With thoughtful styling and guidance, your wardrobe becomes part of the story, adding texture, grace, and emotion to the images that will one day become family heirlooms.
When to Book Your Maternity Session
Timing is one of the most important elements in planning a beautiful Denver maternity photography experience. The right moment ensures your comfort, confidence, and the most flattering representation of your pregnancy.
The Ideal Time for Your Session
Most maternity photographers recommend scheduling your session between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this window, your bump is beautifully round, yet you still have the ease of movement needed for natural posing and comfort. Every woman’s body is unique, so if you are carrying multiples or have specific preferences, we can adjust accordingly to find your perfect timeframe.
Booking in Advance
Because golden hour sessions are highly sought after, I recommend booking two to three months or more in advance to secure your preferred date. Summer and fall weekends tend to fill quickly, especially for outdoor sessions in Denver’s most scenic locations. Weekday evenings often offer a quieter, more private experience with equally beautiful light.
Seasonal Inspiration
Each season in Colorado brings its own sense of magic. The landscapes and lighting shift dramatically throughout the year, offering endless possibilities for your maternity portraits.
- Spring (late April – May): Wildflowers bloom and fresh green foliage creates a soft, romantic setting. Temperatures are mild, making it a lovely time for outdoor sessions. This is probably one of my favorite times of the year for outdoor sessions. The only drawback is that the spring is often very wet and rainy so watch out for mud and keep a close eye on the forecast leading up to your session!
- Summer (June – August): Warm evenings and lush meadows bring vibrant color and glowing light. The heat can definitely be a deterrent for many mothers who are due in the summer time or early fall. An evening session is usually ideal or one higher up in the mountains for that cool air that altitude brings. A studio session is another fantastic option for those sweltering summer days to avoid red faces and sweat marks.
- Fall (September – October): The aspens turn golden, and the air grows crisp. This season offers a rich, painterly palette that feels timeless and elegant, making it a no-brainer why this is the most popular time of year for outdoor sessions. Fall can be windy though so keep that in mind as well.
- Winter (November – February): Snow-kissed backdrops and dramatic skies create ethereal, fine-art imagery. Layers, coats, and cozy textures photograph beautifully in the cooler light. Winter sunsets are often some of the most colorful and magestic. Obviously ice, mud, and snow are concerns at this time of year. This is my other favorite time to embrace the contemporary beauty of studio sessions if you're not feeling particularly adventurous in your third trimester or if you have other little ones who will be joining in the fun.
Altitude and Weather Notes
Denver’s higher elevation means thinner air, stronger sunlight, and quick temperature changes after sunset. Staying hydrated before and during your session helps maintain energy and glow. A light jacket or wrap is always recommended for comfort, especially in open or high-altitude locations.
Whether you envision golden sunlight streaming through summer meadows or a quiet winter landscape dusted with snow, planning ahead ensures your session feels effortless, luxurious, and perfectly timed for your journey into motherhood.
Sunrise and Sunset Light Guide
Light is the single most important element in photography. The word "photography" literally translates to "light painting" in latin. In Colorado, the changing elevation and open skies create a luminous quality that feels almost ethereal. Understanding how light shifts throughout the day helps us plan your session around the most flattering and emotive moments.
For Denver maternity photography, the best time to capture that soft, glowing light is during golden hour: the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset. During this time, the light wraps gently around you, enhancing your skin tones and creating depth and warmth in every image.
Here’s a quick guide to help you visualize the best start times throughout the year:
- Spring: The sun sets between 5:50 and 8:15 p.m. Sessions typically begin around 2 hours before sunset (3:50-6:15 start times) to give ample time to travel to the ideal location and get warmed up in front of the camera before the lighting is at it's most dramatic. The light is gentle, with soft shadows and a delicate pastel hue.
- Summer: The days are the longest in June with the sun setting between 8:15 and 8:45 p.m. and the days get shorter in August with the sun setting closer to 7:30pm. Sessions usually begin around 6-6:30 p.m. Expect luminous golden tones and a warm breeze that adds natural movement to fabrics and hair.
- Fall: The sun sets between 6:30 and 4:30 p.m later in the season towards the end of September. Sessions often start around 3-4 p.m. The light is rich and saturated, with a crisp clarity that enhances the season’s vibrant colors. And don't forget, peak season for colors varies depending on elevation! You can learn more about when the beautiful fall colors peak here in Colorado in this blog.
- Winter: The days are shortest during this season and the sun sets as early as 4:30 p.m. Sessions begin around 2:15 p.m. Cold air creates soft, diffused light that flatters skin tones and adds an elegant, fine-art quality to every image as well as vibrant blues and pinks in the evening sky.
Morning sessions are equally beautiful, particularly for quieter mountain or meadow locations. Sunrise creates a fresh, peaceful energy with pastel tones that feel soft and romantic. Keep in mind though, we typically want to have you facing away from the sun with the sun at about a 45-degree angle behind you. So if you're on the east side of the mountains, this means the mountains will not be behind you in the morning. If you want an early morning session with mountain views, we will need to travel deeper into the mountains so there are peaks all around.
Altitude and Sunlight Tips
At Denver’s elevation of roughly 5,000 to 6,000 feet, sunlight is about 10 to 15 percent stronger than at sea level. The air is thinner, which means the light feels cleaner and more direct. To stay comfortable, I recommend applying a gentle, hydrating SPF before your session. Sunglasses can also be helpful while we set up between shots.
By planning intentionally around the light, we can create imagery that feels cinematic and timeless; portraits that glow with warmth, emotion, and the unmistakable beauty of the Colorado sun.
Bonus Tips for a Seamless Maternity Session
Your Denver maternity photography session is more than a photo shoot. It is an experience designed to honor this extraordinary moment in your life. Every thoughtful detail contributes to how relaxed, radiant, and connected you feel during your time in front of the camera.
To help you prepare with ease, here are a few simple ways to make your session effortless and enjoyable:
Bring Nourishment
Pregnancy requires energy, and outdoor sessions can last up to a few hours. Bring a light snack and water to stay comfortable and refreshed. Fresh fruit, nuts, or a granola bar are perfect options that will not interfere with your makeup or wardrobe. It's also a great idea in the summer months to bring some sort of electrolyte drink with sugar in it in case if you start feeling woozy or light headed from the heat.
Plan for Wardrobe Variety
If you would like to capture a range of looks, plan to bring a second outfit. Many clients love starting with a formal gown and transitioning into something soft and casual. This approach provides both editorial and intimate styles within a single session. I'm always happy to help you curate your wardrobe if this is something you struggle with!
Bring Support
Having someone with you can make a world of difference. A partner, close friend, or family member can help carry items, assist with wardrobe changes, and offer emotional comfort during the shoot. Their presence also adds warmth to your expressions and helps create genuine moments of connection.
Keep Makeup Natural
When photographing in golden hour light, less is often more. Opt for soft, natural makeup that enhances your features without overpowering them. A hydrating base, subtle contour, and a hint of highlighter create a beautiful, natural glow. Professional hair and makeup are always recommended, and I am happy to share trusted artist referrals to complete your look.
After Your Session
Within a week of your session, you will be invited to view your curated gallery and select your favorite images. Together, we will design exquisite print products, albums, or custom wall art that transform your portraits into heirlooms. Many clients also choose to gift a framed print or album to a loved one as a meaningful keepsake.
Each session is an opportunity to slow down, breathe, and celebrate your story. With the right preparation, your maternity portraits will feel effortless, authentic, and infused with emotion — artwork that reflects not only how you look, but how this moment truly feels.
